Sarcopenia in Liver Transplantation

Abstract: Purpose of Review: Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in end-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients and has been linked to poor outcomes on the wait list and post-transplantation. This current perspectives article reviews the ongoing challenges to define sarcopenia in ESLD patients, describes associations of sarcopenia with wait-list and post-transplantation outcomes, and provides summarized data on efforts to prevent and treat sarcopenia through novel interventions. Recent Findings: Supervised exercise programs impr… Show more

“…The different cut‐off thresholds used to define sarcopenia for each of the included studies are listed in Table 2 . 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 LMM was measured via dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (six studies), 7 , 31 , 34 , 39 , 42 , 45 bioelectrical impedance analysis (10 studies), 8 , 32 , 33 , 38 , 40 , 41 , 43 , 44 , 46 , 47 and computed tomography (CT, six studies). 6 , 29 , 30 , 35 , 36 , 37 LMS was measured by HGS (14 studies).…”

“…Elucidating the role of TGR5 in CLD-related sarcopenia in our experimental model might have clinical implications. As previously mentioned, sarcopenia is a critical prognosis determinant in patients with advanced CLD, serving as an independent predictor of mortality and adverse outcomes both in the transplant waiting list and in the post-transplant setting [11,48]. Thus, strategies to ameliorate sarcopenia in patients with CLD may have a beneficial clinical impact.…”

“…We used the presence of low muscle mass based on a single skeletal muscle mass measurement for the definition of sarcopenia, aiming to capture the shrinking component of PFP developed by Fried et al 11 This definition is consistent with most sarcopenia studies in transplant populations 25,26 …”
