Sarcoma-like mural nodules in ovarian mucinous cystadenomas - A report of two cases

Abstract: Sarcoma-like mural nodule is a very rare occurrence in a mucinous tumour of the ovary. Two such nodules having morphologically benign features with osteoclastic giant cells, in the wall of mucinous cystadenoma are described. In addition, these nodules exhibited reactive vascular proliferations. The sarcoma-like nodules are associated with a favourable outcome and must be distinguished from other malignant nodules composed of sarcoma or anaplastic carcinoma that may also occur in the wall of mucinous ovarian tu… Show more

“…Low-grade spindle cell lesions could be underdiagnosed as benign spindle cell proliferations. 1,[4][5][6] Immunohistochemistry will help to elucidate some of these diagnostic difficulties but awareness of the different types of mural nodules and a thorough assessment of morphology are still the key to the diagnosis. 7,8 Pathogenesis of mural nodules in ovarian tumours is not clear.…”

“…Major diagnostic difficulties are often posed if inner nodules are disclosed in these cystic cavities, because this finding must be considered as indicative of a malignant tumor [14,15]. In our present case study, the giant ovarian tumor was multilocular with diverse inner solid masses, and the histopathology evaluation characterized the diagnosis of cystadenocarcinoma.…”

“…Chakrabarti et al described two cases of benign mural nodules suggesting sarcomas in right ovarian mucinous cystadenomas; one of them was a giant (22×18cm) mass. In both cases, the women described a progressive infraumbilical swelling and abdominal pain [14]. Malignant tumors (anaplastic carcinoma, carcinosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, undifferentiated sarcoma), mixed nodules and leiomyoma among others, were ruled out [14].…”

“…They include anaplastic carcinoma, carcinosarcoma, and sarcoma-like nodules, mixed nodules, and leiomyomas [2]. We describe a benign ovarian tumor with a sarcoma like mural nodule (SLMN).…”
