“…33 This threefold increase in the incidence of sarcoidosis in black patients of African descent is lower than previous estimates, which had shown up to 10 times more cases of sarcoidosis in AfricanAmericans than in European Americans. 34,35 A higher prevalence of sarcoidosis in people of African descent has also been observed in the U.K.; 36 in this study, Indo-Pakistan Asians also showed a high prevalence of sarcoidosis. By contrast, Chinese and Japanese Asians appeared to be less prone than other ethnic groups to develop this disease, 37 with annual incidences of only 0Á73 and 1Á28/100 000 for Japanese men and women, respectively.…”

“…Variations of incidence in a relatively homogeneous population according to the place of residence suggests a role for environmental factors, as observed in North compared with South Italy, or in Irish people living in London, compared with those living in Ireland. 36,40 Connubial cases, seasonal influences and small 'epidemics' of sarcoidosis have been described in the past, suggesting a role for infectious agents. 39 Exposure to pollutants could be involved in the increased incidence of the disease observed in New York firefighters, especially after the 2001 World Trade Centre disaster, although exposure to the dust cloud does not appear to have been a risk factor.…”

“…No association was found between either the ACE I/D or TNF-307 polymorphisms and disease phenotype, which would suggest that neither of these polymorphisms are related to disease progression in African Americans and that the case mix in the present study population did not influence its susceptibility results. If the TNF-307 polymorphism is actually a marker for Lofgrens syndrome and erythema nodosum in sarcoidosis, as several studies report [17,42], then these conditions being rare in African-American sarcoidosis cases [43] may explain the negative findings with respect to this polymorphism in the current study. However, the extent to which the current authors could exclude a disease progression gene was limited by a smaller sample size due to missing and incomplete phenotype data, which did not allow the present study to consider the full range of phenotypic expressions the genes under study could exhibit.…”

“…In the west regarding ethnicity is concerned, the Puerto Ricans in America and the Scandinavians in Europe suffer from this disease more commonly, also blacks are several times more affected compared to whites. [9][10][11] The clinical presentation and natural course of sarcoidosis vary greatly. 12 Although almost any organ of the body can be affected, the lungs or intrathoracic lymph node are involved in almost all the cases (>90%).…”
