“…Due to the wide variety of Sarcocystis species, and the wide variety of definitive and intermediate hosts (FRANCO et al, 2018;, it is difficult to identify the source of goose contamination. Waterfowl that inhabit and feed in shallow waters are more commonly infected than those that inhabit deeper waters (CHEN et al, 2015), suggesting that the infection occurs most commonly in shallow and marshy waters.…”

“…is an obligate intracellular coccidian parasite that requires an intermediate and a definitive host (usually an herbivore and carnivore, respectively) and can affect several species of mammals and birds (El-MORSEY et al, 2015). The genus is composed of more than 100 species (some of which are zoonotic) that differ in their levels of pathogenicity, host specificity, cyst structure and location (FRANCO et al, 2018).…”

“…However, it may lead to signifi cant economic losses in the form of abortion, reduced milk yield, neurologic signs, and loss of weight. Moreover, down-regulation of the meat quality, decreased wool and fi ber production adding to its zoonotic importance [2,3]. Sarcocystosis has a worldwide distribution with a high prevalence rate both in rural and developed areas [4].…”

“…One of the limitations for the production and commercialization of SAC meat is the frequent finding of macroscopic cysts (1–5 mm) resembling rice grains in skeletal muscles (Decker Franco et al., 2018; Moré et al., 2016; Saeed et al., 2018). Cysts essentially consist of encapsulated conglomerates of up to 2 × 10 7 protozoan parasites of the Sarcocystis aucheniae species, and have a brain-like structure when examined under electron microscopy (Carletti et al., 2013; Decker Franco et al., 2018; Moré et al., 2016). Cysts are usually very abundant and give an unpleasant aspect to SAC meat, which leads to confiscation of carcasses by sanitary authorities or devaluation of their commercial value.…”

“…Most aspects of S. aucheniae cycle are yet to be elucidated , but can be inferred from studies carried out in other Sarcocystis species (Dubey et al., 2015; Decker Franco et al., 2018; Saeed et al., 2018) . These coccidians complete their life cycle in an intermediate herbivore and a carnivore definitive host, in which, respectively, the asexual and sexual reproduction phases take place.…”
