SARC‐F and SARC‐CalF are associated with sarcopenia traits in hemodialysis patients

Abstract: Background:The SARC-F questionnaire assesses sarcopenia risk. The addition of a calf circumference measurement, known as SARC-CalF, has been recently proposed. We investigated possible associations of SARC-F and SARC-CalF with sarcopenia traits in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Thirty patients (17 men; 57 ± 15 years) were enrolled. Sarcopenia risk was assessed by SARC-F (≥4) and SARC-CalF (≥11). Probable (low muscle strength or low skeletal muscle mass [SMM]) and confirmed (both) sarcopenia were dia… Show more

“…[31][32][33][34] Additionally, SARC-CalF demonstrated higher sensitivity compared with SARC-F in patients undergoing HD. 35 CC has also been suggested as a component of the sarcopenia screening tool proposed by Ishii et al 36 and for the SARC-CalF score. 31 The CC measurement is one of the tests recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) as a screening tool for sarcopenia.…”

“…Multiple studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of SARC‐CalF found that its performance in screening for sarcopenia was enhanced by incorporating CC measurements 31–34 . “…Also, the SARC-F questionnaire was developed as a rapid screening tool for sarcopenia, and updated versions have been proposed since then, such as the SARC-CalF which by adding a calf circumference measurement has been shown to increase the sensibility to detect sarcopenia in patients on haemodialysis. 38 Moreover, these findings highlight the critical need for clinicians to prescribe effective targeted interventions that may counterattack this phenomenon, such as resistance exercise training and adequate caloric and protein intake. 39 Moreover, we encourage the use of a consensus definition based on the geographic location where it is available, for example, the AWGS for Asians, the EWGSOP2 for Europeans, and the FNIH for North Americans.…”

“…The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 recommends the use of CC as a method to diagnose sarcopenia because of its high sensitivity and specificity in the Asian population [ 5 7 ]. According to previous studies, a lot of diseases have close links to CC, such as sarcopenia, disability, non-alcoholic fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, and so on [ 8 10 ]. Moreover, CC can predict nutritional risks in old adults and forecast mortality among patients [ 11 , 12 ].…”
