Do Land Ownership and Agro-Ecological Location of Farmland Influence Adoption of Improved Rice Varieties? Evidence from Sierra Leone

This study investigates the impact of farmland ownership and agro-ecological location on the adoption of the two most important sources of improved rice varieties (NERICA and ROK) in the context of Sierra Leone. In terms of farmland ownership, the results showed that farmers who cultivated their own land had a higher tendency of remaining as non-adopters of improved varieties, but those who rented farmland or were engaged in sharecropping had higher adoption rates of improved rice varieties. Also, the location of farmland (uplands or inland valley swamps) determined the rates of adoption of improved varieties differently. For instance, upland regions showed faster adoption of ROK varieties, but inland valley areas showed faster adoption of NERICA varieties. We also examined the survival rates of local rice varieties. The adoption of improved varieties was only occurring at a very low rate, and the farmers' adoption of ROK varieties was swifter than for NERICA varieties. This study recommends that policies advocating the adoption of improved rice varieties in Sierra Leone must take into consideration the patterns of farmland ownership and location.

S U M M A R YBackground: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is exacerbated by depression and confers significant healthcare costs. Whilst adverse impacts may be mitigated by physical activity, many patients with CKD remain physically inactive, with this physical inactivity potentially influenced by how CKD is appraised. Objectives:The study aims to explore the relationship between physical activity, depression and illness representations in CKD. Methods: Patients with CKD but not requiring dialysis completed the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Short-Form International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF). Demographic information was obtained via medical records. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to determine the relationship of illness representations with levels of physical activity. Moderation and mediation analyses were performed to investigate the role of depression in any relationship between illness representations and physical activity levels.Results: Seventy respondents, 60 % male, with a mean age of 60 AE 16 years, took part in the study. Of illness representation dimensions, personal control was positively associated with levels of physical activity whilst timeline cyclical (a subscale of the IPQ-R relating to patient beliefs about the nature of their illness) was a significant predictor. Severity of depression was neither a moderator nor a mediator of illness representations and levels of physical activity. Conclusion:Facets of illness representations had significant relationships with levels of physical activity. Future research concerning the development and validation of psychological interventions based on an illness representations framework for patients with CKD not requiring dialysis is proposed. The efficacy of such interventions could be then evaluated using a randomised controlled method. Geovisualization in both 2D and 3D forms can be used as a medium for disseminating information of landslide vulnerability. Determining proper geovisualization is very important so that the information carried about landslide vulnerability is truly helpful and can be understood by the community as enduser. There are very few research in current literature explaining the user preferences on geovisualization 2D and 3D related to landslide vulnerability. In this paper, the user preferences of both 2D and 3D geovisualization will be evaluated. This study will focus to find out which geovisualization suits most users and their literacy spatial among those provided geovisualizations. Geovisualization of landslide disaster vulnerabilities will be displayed to users in 2D and 3D. Then to find out their spatial literacy and preferences, interviews were conducted with users regarding the geovisualization presented. The results of the user's answers are then collected and evaluated. From our results, 90% of users prefer 3D geovisualization over 2D. Furthermore, our analysis shows that 2D geovisualization has the advantage of being easily understood by users in all ages. Meanwhile, 3D geovisualization is better at increasing users' spatial literacy at all ages and levels of education in knowing the causes of landslide vulnerability. Choosing the proper geovisualization will provide information and knowledge that is useful for communities in regards of landslide vulnerability for better disaster awareness.
