Sampling Efficiency and Performance of Selected Thoracic Aerosol Samplers

Abstract: Measurement of worker exposure to a thoracic health-related aerosol fraction is necessary in a number of occupational situations. This is the case of workplaces with atmospheres polluted by fibrous particles, such as cotton dust or asbestos, and by particles inducing irritation or bronchoconstriction such as acid mists or flour dust. Three personal and two static thoracic aerosol samplers were tested under laboratory conditions. Sampling efficiency with respect to particle aerodynamic diameter was measured in … Show more

“…Thoracic dust, endotoxins, cultivatable bacteria and fungi were collected on 37-mm glass fibre filters (pore size: 0.8 µm; Millipore, Billerica, MA, USA) using a thoracic parallel particle impactor (PPI)-T (Tecora, Paris, France) connected to a sampling pump (Aircheck 2000, Tecora, Paris, France) operating at 2 L/min (Görner et al, 2017). Airflow was checked before and after sampling.…”

“…This experimental approach enabled us to avoid a filter with a mass that deviates from the target value of 2.5 mg. After its generation, the aerosol is routed to a buffer volume, thus making it less dependent on a variation in mass during generation. The aerosol then reaches the PM10 or PM2.5 separator with a cut-off diameter d50 at 10 μm for 3.0 L min −1 and 2.5 µm for 4.0 L min −1 , respectively, and described elsewhere [29]. During loading on a filter, clip 2 is installed, and clip 1 is removed.…”
