Samplers for VOCs in air based on cyclodextrin–silica hybrid microporous solid phases

Abstract: Samplers for VOCs in air based on cyclodextrin-silica hybrid microporous solid phases are proposed. The solid phase preparation is very easy and inexpensive. Proposed samplers compared with other solid phases present the advantages of a wider range of operative conditions for VOCs desorption. Samplers are tested based on results for the determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene (BTEX) in air. Operational parameters are optimized and quantitative recovery is obtained us… Show more

“…9 βCD-based materials have been reported to be efficient in inclusion complex formation towards several organic pollutants. 2,3,5,6,[10][11][12][13][14] Deep Eutectic Systems (DES) have been recently suggested as innovative materials with potential in gas absorption. [15][16][17][18] Practically speaking, a DES is the result of the combination in the proper ratio of an opportune hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) and a hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA).…”

“…31 The stoichiometry of theses materials, which can incorporate a diversity of cyclodextrin in variable amounts, corresponds to the general formula (CD)xSiO1.5(OH)0.5·0.7H2O, where the x value depends (among other parameters) on the cyclodextrin type (x = 0.0007, 0.0013 and 0.0016, for solids containing β-cyclodextrin, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and γ-cyclodextrin, respectively). A preliminary part in the present work concerned cyclodextrin selection.…”

“…Moreover, NMR studies confirmed that no 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin degradation occurred under the preparative working conditions. 31 Nanopure water from a Brastead purification system was employed. A Vac Elut 20 connected to a diaphragm vacuum pump (CKNF Model N 0.26.3 AN 18) was employed to treat the samples.…”

“…Some molecules that CD form IC can be hazardous and polluting chemicals, so CDs are fairly useful for filtration/separation/purification areas (Olah et al, 1988;Crini and Morcellet, 2002;Landy et al, 2012;Morin-Crini and Crini, 2013;Schofield et al, 2012). For this purpose, it can be considered that, CD have also potential for the elimination of VOCs from the environment (Favier et al, 2011;Mauri-Aucejo et al, 2012). However, during the use of powder and cross-linked polymeric granular form of CD, handling and reusability appear as challenge which restricts their potential.…”
