O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho de amostra (número de plantas) necessário para estimação da média de caracteres morfológicos de trigo mourisco (Fagopyrum esculentum), das cultivares IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar, nos estádios vegetativo e florescimento da cultura. Foram conduzidos 21 ensaios de uniformidade para cada cultivar (IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar), formados pela combinação de anos agrícolas e datas de semeadura e de avaliação. Nesses ensaios, os caracteres morfológicos: altura de planta, número de folhas e número de nós, foram avaliados em 2.280 plantas de cada cultivar (IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar), totalizando 4.560 plantas amostradas aleatoriamente. Foram calculadas medidas de tendência central, variabilidade, assimetria e valor-p do teste de normalidade de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Foi calculado o tamanho de amostra para estimação da média desses três caracteres, assumindo erros de estimação (semi-amplitudes do intervalo de confiança de 95%) iguais a 5%, 10%, 15% e 20% da média. Há variabilidade do tamanho de amostra entre os caracteres morfológicos, as cultivares e os estádios fenológicos do trigo mourisco. Em um experimento, para estimação da média da altura de planta, número de folhas e número de nós de trigo mourisco, das cultivares IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar, nos estádios vegetativo e florescimento, com erro máximo de 20% da média e grau de confiança de 95%, são necessárias 42 plantas por tratamento.

Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) is an annual cycle legume with high potential for biological nitrogen fixation, being widely used in crop rotation for biomass formation and control of nematodes. The objectives of this study were to determine the sample size for the mean estimation of productive traits of sunn hemp and verify the sample size variability between traits and sowing dates. Two uniformity trials were performed in the agricultural year 2014/2015, with sowing in October (trial 1) and December (trial 2). At the crop flowering stage, 300 plants of each trial were harvested and fresh and dry matter of leaves, stem, root, aerial part, and total weight were evaluated. The normality and randomness tests were performed for each trait and the sample size was calculated for the semi-amplitudes of the confidence interval (estimation errors) of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20% of the mean estimate. There is sample size variability between productive traits and between sowing dates. The assessment of at least 101 plants is required for mean estimation of productive traits with maximum estimation error of 20% of the mean and 95% confidence level.

It is important to determine the number of plants to be evaluated to allow accurate inferences about the traits under evaluation. Investigating the linear relations among traits is important for identifying traits for indirect selection. So, the objectives of this study were to determine the sample size (number of plants) necessary to estimate the means of forage pea traits and to investigate the relations among the traits. Experiments were carried out in 2021 with three sowing dates (May 3, May 26 and July 13). Five hundred plants were randomly sampled, 100 plants in each of the five evaluation dates (June 25, August 30, July 24, September 17, September 16). In these 500 plants, the traits plant height, number of branches, number of nodes, number of leaves, number of pods, fresh matter of leaves, fresh matter of stems, fresh matter of pods, fresh matter of shoots, dry matter of leaves, dry matter of stems, dry matter of pods, and dry matter of shoots, were evaluated. The sample size was calculated to estimate the means of these traits, based on Student’s t-distribution, and the relations among traits were investigated through correlation and path analysis. In an experiment, to estimate the means of these 13 traits of forage pea, with an estimation error of approximately 10% of the mean, 99 plants per treatment should be sampled. The numbers of pods and leaves have a positive linear relations with fresh and dry matter of shoots.
