“…After the experimental exposure of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) to S. typhimurium, 30 daysin pure recirculating water was required before salmonellae could no longer be isolated (27). The suggestion that fish exposed to pathogens may be depurated by being held in clear, flowing water is common (2,8,9,20,41). However, this extra step in the production of fish requires additional facilities, time, expense, and management, whereas there is no guarantee of the final quality of the product.…”

“…Fish taken directly from the Gulf of Mexico yielded no salmonellae; therefore, ocean fish appear to be free from salmonellae or contaminated infrequently. Other investigators have also found that some freshwater fish and fish collected from seawater near the coast are infected with enteric bacteria, but fish caught in the open sea are not (3). Samples collected on the boats were frequently contaminated, but the fish were washed out of the boats with pump water from the plants and the boats were not thoroughly cleaned subsequent to unloading.…”

“…Overall results revealed that the plant under investigation had exerted good process control in order to maintain superior bacteriological quality of their products (Hatha et al, 2003). Occurrence of Salmonella in fish and shellfish, either in fresh of marine waters has normally been associated with fecal contamination of the area from which they were harvested (Buttaiux, 1962). Thus it is generally suggested not to use animal manure as a source of fertilizer for aquaculture ponds because this practice introduces Salmonella which was later isolated from the harvested product (Miget, 1991).…”

“…Contamination of seafood with Salmonella is major public health concern. The occurrence of Salmonella in fish and shellfish, either in fresh or marine waters has normally been associated with fecal contamination of the area from which they were harvested (Buttaiux, 1962) On the other hand, Escherichia coli, the representative of coliforms, are gram-negative, rod-shaped facultatively anaerobic bacteria.…”
