Salmonella in Raw Chicken Meat from the Romanian Seaside: Frequency of Isolation and Antibiotic Resistance

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Salmonella in raw chicken meat samples collected at the Romanian seaside and to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. In 2012, 317 chicken meat samples from slaughterhouses (n = 289) and retail markets (n = 28) were evaluated. Overall, 13.2% (42) of the samples contained Salmonella; 12.8% (37) and 17.8% (5) from the chicken carcasses at slaughterhouses and the fresh meat from retail markets, respectively. Eight serotypes of Sal… Show more

“…The high resistance rate to tetracycline and streptomycin (about 44%) was inevitable, since these antibiotics are popularly used on farms and in humans in Vietnam. This finding is in line with previous reports from Romania (Tirziu et al, ) and Tokyo (Katoh et al, ). Ceftazidime has shown to be a good antibiotic, with no Salmonella isolates being resistant all isolates.…”

“…The high prevalence of Salmonella isolates in retail meats obtained in this study was similar to that described in previous studies (Donado‐Godoy et al, ; Katoh et al, ; Takeshi et al, ). The 28% overall prevalence of Salmonella isolates observed in this study is lower than that found in other studies conducted in Spain (35.8%; Dominguez, Gomez, & Zumalacarregui, ) and Portugal (60%; Antunes, Reu, Sousa, Peixe, & Pestana, ), but higher than figures reported from Ireland (2.8%; Jordan et al, ) and Romania (13.2%; Tirziu et al, ). In general, the various levels of contamination might also be related to climate and temperature of food storage (Akil, Ahmad, & Reddy, ).…”

“…Así, se han encontrado cepas resistentes de Salmonella en diferentes etapas de la cadena productiva avícola. Dichas cepas han sido aisladas de muestras de granja, contenido cecal, carcasas y carne de pollo (Mainali et al 2014, Tîrziu et al 2015, Voss-Rech et al 2015, Cui et al 2016.…”

“…Also, along with Salmonella kentucky, it was the most commonly reported serovar showing multidrug resistance [14]. Both nationally and in Europe, it has been the most frequently identified serovar in chicken meat in recent years [14,25,38].…”
