Salivary secretory immunoglobulin A reactivity: a comparison to cortisol and -amylase patterns in the same breast cancer survivors

Abstract: IntroductionOne way to examine the extent to which the stress associated with a breast cancer experience (BC) impacts stress-related physiological mechanisms is to study the secretion patterns of associated biomarkers. Unlike cortisol and α-amylase (sAA), biomarkers of immune functioning such as secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) have rarely been examined in BC survivors.Aim of the studyThis study had two principal aims: the first was to evaluate the basal secretion profiles of SIgA as well as its response to a… Show more

“…However, in their study, cortisol concentrations in the same participants were also elevated in tandem with alpha-amylase values. Typically, cortisol stress-induced reactions are delayed compared to that of alpha-amylase following TSST (Lambert et al, 2018). These findings corroborate other replications using the TSST paradigm in that sAA levels increased after a stressor and recovered within 10 minutes (Fischer et al, 2017;Nater et al, 2005Nater et al, , 2006.…”

“…Paradigms used in this type of research usually involve an active and present threat such as tasks conducted in the TSST. The very few studies that have examined both biomarkers, cortisol and sAA, in the same subjects (Balodis et al, 2010;Lambert et al, 2018;Lucas et al, 2017) have used the TSST, the gold standard for producing a reliable physiological stress response. In each of these studies, elevations in both cortisol and sAA were observed.…”

“…Cancer is associated with a change in a person’s life situation, which exposes the patient to significant stress during its course. This is confirmed by the results of Lambert et al, who, in their study on breast cancer survivors, describe disturbances in the secretion of cortisol in a group of oncological patients [ 56 ]. As proved by Sephton et al, dysregulation of cortisol secretion in cancer patients is also associated with impaired cell-mediated immunity [ 58 ].…”

“…However, in the stimulated saliva of Group II, a positive correlation was found between the level of cortisol and the cumulative dose of BPs. Cortisol is a steroid hormone secreted in response to stress [ 56 , 57 ]. Cancer is associated with a change in a person’s life situation, which exposes the patient to significant stress during its course.…”

“…There are no clear mechanisms to explain sIgA change in relation to pain. 64 In a study where pain intensity during CPT was measured, sIgA fell significantly after first exposure to CPT, but not after second exposure in the same participants’ other arm. There was no correlation with pain intensity.…”
