Salivary Biomarkers Associated With Gingivitis and Response to Therapy

Abstract: Background Salivary biomarkers are potentially important for determining the presence, risk, and progression of periodontal disease. However, clinical translation of biomarker technology from lab to chairside requires studies that identify biomarkers associated with the transitional phase between health and periodontal disease (i.e., gingivitis). Methods Eighty participants (40 with gingivitis, 40 healthy) provided saliva at baseline and 7 to 30 days later. An additional sample was collected from gingivitis … Show more

“…A previous study detected IL-1β at extremely low concentrations in the serum of periodontally healthy patients and gingivitis patients (29). In addition, salivary IL-1β levels of gingivitis patients and healthy controls were reported to be similar (30). In accordance with the findings in the literature, in the present study, salivary levels of the evaluated genes were similar in groups G and H (Fig.…”

“…While a limited number of analytes for both local and systemic diseases have been identified in saliva, biomarker discovery and validation depends upon an understanding of normal day-to-day variations 22,47 in a particular analyte, as well as identification of health states that would alter the analyte values. The current study evaluated key biomarkers of cardiovascular disease, including inflammation and myocardial damage in serum and saliva and documented effects of oral health/disease on the levels of these analytes in the fluids.…”

“…Similarly, a different study found elevated levels of LTA 4 hydrolase in oral mucositis patients (Jehmlich et al , ). Elevated salivary levels of PGE2 were found to be correlated with gingivitis (Syndergaard et al , ; Gümüş et al , ) and periodontitis (Sánchez et al , ). In chronic periodontitis patients, salivary LTB 4 levels were to found to correlate with the severity of alveolar bone loss (Sánchez et al , ).…”
