Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a prevalent form of dementia, posing significant health and societal burdens. Pathologically characterized by neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques, it lacks definitive diagnostic markers. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)23 and Sialic Acids (Sias) are implicated in cell signaling and antioxidative defense, while lipid peroxidation (LPO) is linked to neurodegeneration. The aim of this study was to assess serum levels of Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23), Malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of lipid peroxidation, Sialic Acids (Sias), and albumin in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients compared to age-matched healthy controls. Method: A case-control study involving 17 AD patients and 17 healthy controls investigated serum levels of FGF23, Sias, malondialdehyde (MDA), and albumin. Biochemical assays and statistical analyses were conducted. Results: Biochemical analyses revealed a significant increase in serum FGF23 and MDA levels in AD patients compared to controls (p < 0.05). Additionally, AD patients exhibited lower levels of serum Sias and albumin. Furthermore, in the patient group, serum MDA levels were inversely correlated with normalized global gray matter volume (GMV), adjusted for age, sex, and Child-Pugh class. Conclusion: This study underscores the potential of FGF23, MDA, Sias, and albumin as biomarkers for AD. Further research elucidating their roles in AD pathogenesis is warranted. Decreased FGF23 in AD may involve disrupted phosphate regulation and neuroprotection mechanisms. Elevated MDA suggests increased lipid peroxidation, contributing to neuronal damage. Reduced Sias may impair antioxidative defense, exacerbating oxidative stress. Low albumin levels correlate with cognitive decline and oxidative damage in AD.

Background; SARS-CoV-2, the novel corona virus that originated in Wuhan, China in late December is a positive single stranded RNA virus. COVID-19, a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 is characterized by symptoms such as fever, sore throat, dry cough, loss of sense of taste and smell etc. The symptoms may range from asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe and critical. The virus enters through its spike protein (S) to the ACE2 receptors. The aim of the study is to evaluation of ferritin, D-dimer, CRP and IL-6 in patients who affected with COVID-19. Patients and methods; A cross-sectional conducted in many Hospitals in Baghdad. This study conducted between January to June 2022 on patients infected with the Corona virus. A total of sixty subjects were participated in the present study. Thirty patients of both sexes, with different ages and in the severity infection with the Corona virus, divided into two groups. Results; There were significant elevations in the concentration of serum ferritin and D dimer of COVID-19 patients, as compared with control healthy subjects. Also, there is significant elevation in the concentration of serum CRP of patients with COVID-19, as compare with control healthy subjects.

Background: Outbreak pneumonia announced in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, had its causative factor classified as a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Since saliva can host several viruses including SARS-CoV-2, the transmission chance of viruses through saliva, particularly those causing respiratory infections, is unavoidable. COVID-19 can be detected through salivary diagnostic testing which has lots of advantages for medical care professionals and patients. However, the utility of saliva in diagnosing COVID-19 infection remains understudied. Aim of the study: In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive and updated source of information about salivary markers of liver enzyme, cytokines and oxidative stress in associated with the infections caused by COVID-19 and the various effects it has had on the dental profession and patients visits to dental clinics. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, and Google Scholar from December 1, 2020, till April 15, 2021. Results: Nine studies were included in this study. Pooled results showed a significant increase in salivary liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT among patients with Covid‐19. Three studies showed a significant elevations in salivary TNF-α, CRP, IL‐6 and,IL-10 levels among patients with Covid‐19. Four studies that reported a significant in elevation salivary level of MDA, whereas reduction salivary levels of SOD, catalase, GPX. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis shows that deranged of salivary liver enzymes , hyper-inflammation, may indicate severe COVID-19 and could also predict mortality. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between derangement in salivary biochemical and mortality in COVID-19.
