Safety of users in road evacuation: modelling and DSS for pedestrian outflow

Abstract: This paper concerns the simulation of pedestrian outflow related to the evacuation of a building. In this paper, after a literature review concerning commercial software suited for the simulation of evacuation, a simulation tool is proposed and a comparison between results obtained from simulations and data recorded from an experimentation on a test site is also presented.

“…As part of the project, several real evacuations of an urban center were carried out. The main results refer to a better understanding of: demand models, considering also SP surveys [31]; supply models with the calibration of the cost functions [32], [33]; design models [34] considering traffic junction regulation [35], [36] and design of the routes for emergency vehicles [37]; appropriate DSS [38], [39] considering multimodality [40], evidencing risk [41], [42]; planning methods [43], comprehensive of evacuation planning [44], [45] training [46], exercises and evaluation tools to reduce risk [47].…”

“…Many authors dealt with emergency conditions both in the preventive and postcatastrophe phases, and some guidelines have been drawn up [10][11][12]. Even scenarios and tools for the mobilization of emergency teams were broadly applied in 'what if' or 'what to' case studies in planning or verifying the evacuation policies in urban areas subject to disasters [13][14][15][16][17][18].…”
