Safety issues and new rapid detection methods in traditional Chinese medicinal materials

Abstract: The safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a major strategic issue that involves human health. With the continuous improvement in disease prevention and treatment, the export of TCM and its related products has increased dramatically in China. However, the frequent safety issues of Chinese medicine have become the ‘bottleneck’ impeding the modernization of TCM. It was proved that mycotoxins seriously affect TCM safety; the pesticide residues of TCM are a key problem in TCM international trade; adulter… Show more

“…Therefore, use of authentic species is essential to maintain the growth and development of medicinal plant sectors. DNA diagnostics have become the gold standard for scientific validation of herbal products 14 , 24 . Previously, random amplification polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were developed to authenticate Shankhpushpi species 25 as well as for genetic diversity analysis 1 , 26 .…”

“…Environmental pollution, non-standardized planting, processing and storage, and other factors contribute to excessive accumulation of exogenous toxic residues. The residues of heavy metals and harmful elements [62] , pesticide residues [63] , mycotoxins [64] , and pigment residues [65] are considered to be the most primary exogenous toxic residues and seriously affect the safety of TCMs [66] . The testing methods and maximum residue limits (MRLs) were set in the pharmacopoeia of each country.…”

“…There are increasing applications of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) for the prevention and treatment of various illnesses, and in parallel, the increased use has been accompanied by an emerging concern regarding the safety of CHMs ( Zeng and Jiang, 2010 ; Willamson et al, 2013 ; Wang et al, 2015 ). Cases of severe adverse effects caused by CHMs, particularly hepatotoxicity, have been frequently reported over the past few decades ( Teschke et al, 2014 ; Chan et al, 2015 ; Coghlan et al, 2015 ).…”
