Safety, feasibility and weight loss after transoral gastroplasty: First human multicenter study

Abstract: There is great interest in new procedures for morbid obesity that could offer lower morbidity than current options. Early experience with the TOGa procedure indicates that this transoral approach may be safe and feasible. Further experience with the device and technique should improve anatomic and functional outcomes in the future. Additional studies are underway.

“…New suture instruments such as StomaphyX from Endogastric Solutions, or the TOGA endoscopy-controlled transoral flexible stapler set from Satiety Inc. are being developed. The preliminary experience of J. Devière using TOGA, in 21 patients with a BMI between 35 and 53 looks encouraging, with consequent weight loss and BMI decrease, the staple line partially or completely maintained, no severe adverse events, and an improvement of quality of life indexes [41].…”

“…The initial feasibility and safety of this technique have been reported by Devière et al [19] in the first human multicenter trial of the TOGA System. Device introduction was completed safely in all 21 patients (mean BMI 43.3 ± 5.0, range 35–53) enrolled in the study.…”
