This study aimed to characterize the chemical composition of Aloysia polystachia, Acantholippia seriphioides, Schinus molle, Solidago chilensis, Lippia turbinata, Minthostachys mollis, Buddleja globosa, and Baccharis latifolia essential oils (EOs), and to evaluate their antibacterial activities and their capacity to provoke membrane disruption in Paenibacillus larvae, the bacteria that causes the American Foulbrood (AFB) disease on honey bee larvae. The relationship between the composition of the EOs and these activities on P. larvae was also analyzed. Monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds in all EOs. All EOs showed antimicrobial activity against P. larvae and disrupted the cell wall and cytoplasmic membrane of P. larvae provoking the leakage of cytoplasmic constituents (with the exception of B. latifolia EO). While, the EOs' antimicrobial activity was correlated most strongly to the content of pulegone, carvone, (Z)-β-ocimene, δ-cadinene, camphene, terpinen-4-ol, elemol, β-pinene, β-elemene, γ-cadinene, α-terpineol, and bornyl acetate; the volatiles that better explained the membrane disruption were carvone, limonene, cis-carvone oxide, pentadecane, trans-carvyl acetate, trans-carvone oxide, trans-limonene oxide, artemisia ketone, trans-carveol, thymol, and γ-terpinene (positively correlated) and biciclogermacrene, δ-2-carene, verbenol, α-pinene, and α-thujene (negatively correlated). The studied EOs are proposed as natural alternative means of control for the AFB disease.

The present study was carried for the toxicological assessment of Cinnamomum tamala essential oil (CTEO) in vivo since no previous work has reported the sub‐chronic toxicity in rats. Hence, the aim of the present study was to study for the first time sub‐chronic toxicity of CTEO, extracted from C. tamala leaves, in Wistar rats. Recently, there is development of new food preservatives to increase the shelf life of food. The incorporation of CTEO as a food preservative could be a good alternative to synthetic compounds. For decades, C. tamala and its leaves are being used in food and pharmaceutical preparation. In order to fulfill the requirements suggested by the Scientific Committee on Food for safety assessment of substances used in food contact materials, sub‐chronic studies are needed. Therefore, in vivo experiments have been conducted to assess the antidiabetic and antioxidant properties of CTEO, which also demands toxicity assessment. Practical applications Medicinal plants and herbs have been used since ancient times for their formulations and essential oils (EOs). Several studies have investigated the composition of EOs and plant extracts having nutritional and medicinal properties. Cinnamomum tamala essential oil (CTEO) is used in the food and pharmaceutical preparations as well as in traditional medicinal systems as a preservative and curative agent in various alignments. In the present study, the oral acute and sub‐chronic toxicity of CTEO was assessed in Wistar rats, including the clinical, hematological, biochemical and pathological parameters. The repeated oral administration of CTEO showed no mortality, alterations in food and water intake, body weight, hematology and biochemistry, organ weight and histopathology. In conclusion, the use of CTEO in food and other pharmaceutical preparations may be safe due to its lack of toxicity in Wistar rats during the period of study.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the protective effects of Minthostachys verticillata essential oil (Mv-EO) against aflatoxin B 1-induced toxicity in Vero cells in vitro and in male rats. The cytotoxicity of AFB 1 (0-30 µg/mL) and Mv-EO (0-500 µg/mL) was determined on Vero cells using the Neutral Red assays. The tested Mv-EO did not cause genotoxicity or cytotoxicity in vivo and was able to attenuate AFB 1-caused cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Animals were divided into four groups consisting of 5 (five) rats in each group: T1 basal feed (BFnegative control), T2 BF + Mv-EO [0.04%], T3 BF + AFB 1 [100 µg/kg], T4 BF + food with AFB 1 [100 µg/kg] + Mv-EO [0.04%]. Tissue samples were collected at the end of treatment period for genotoxic study and histological examination. Treatment with Mv-EO alone and even combined with AFB 1 showed a significant improvement in the histomorphometry of intestinal villi, without alteration of productive parameters. Also, the micronucleus test demonstrated that Mv-EO reduced AFB 1-induced DNA damage on bone marrow cells of male Wistar rats. This study demonstrated that Mv-EO could be used as protective against AFB 1-induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, and as phytogenic feed additive.
