Introduction: Research and practice have demonstrated that decisions made prior to work at construction\ud sites can influence construction worker safety. However, it has also been argued that most architects and\ud design engineers possess neither the knowledge of construction safety nor the knowledge of construction\ud processes necessary to effectively perform Construction Hazards Prevention through Design (CHPtD).\ud Method: This paper introduces a quantitative methodology that supports designers by providing a way to\ud evaluate the safety-related performance of residential construction designs using a risk analysis–based\ud approach. The methodology compares the overall safety risk level of various construction designs and ranks\ud the significance of the various safety risks of each of these designs. The methodology also compares the\ud absolute importance of a particular safety risk in various construction designs. Results: Because the\ud methodology identifies the relevance of each safety risk at a particular site prior to the construction stage,\ud significant risks are highlighted in advance. Thus, a range of measures for mitigating safety risks can then be\ud implemented during on-site construction. Impact on industry: The methodology is specially worthwhile for\ud designers, who can compare construction techniques and systems during the design phase and determine\ud the corresponding level of safety risk without their creative talents being restricted. Some evidence exists that lean projects are safer, but we don't understand why. Providing an explanation is one of the objectives of the Construction Safety Research Group formed by the Project Production Systems Laboratory (P2SL). In this paper, we describe the research program of the group and its findings in year one of three, including an explanation why lean projects are safer that is grounded in the principle: Respect for people.

RESUMOO planejamento e controle da segurança são reconhecidos como medida efi caz na prevenção de acidentes do trabalho, sobretudo em processos com elevado risco de acidentes, os quais são aqui denominados de processos críticos. Este artigo propõe um método para planejamento de processos críticos na construção civil e descreve uma aplicação prática de princípios para projeto de processos seguros. Foi realizado o planejamento integrado entre segurança e produção para a montagem de uma escada pré-fabricada de concreto, atividade defi nida como processo crítico na construção de um hospital. O estudo indicou que o planejamento de processos críticos deve ser desenvolvido em três etapas: coleta de informações e tomada de decisões iniciais; preparação e difusão dos planos; e ajustes nos planos após o primeiro ciclo de produção. Os resultados demonstram como os planos de segurança contribuem para delimitar zonas de trabalho seguras e inseguras, bem como tornar visíveis os limites entre essas zonas. ABSTRACT Integrated safety and production planning is known as one of the most effective preventive measures to tackle accidents. It is even more important in highrisk construction processes, referred to as critical processes in this paper. A method to plan critical processes in construction is presented in this study. The method was tested in the installation of a pre-fabricated staircase, which was considered to be a critical process in the construction of a hospital. The proposed method has three stages: data collection on process and product characteristics; development and dissemination of plans; adjustments in the plans after the fi rst cycle of execution. The results point out how safety planning and control contribute to establish safe and unsafe working zones as well as how it makes visible the boundaries between those zones. KEY WORDS
