Safety and Feasibility of a Novel Sparse Optical Coherence Tomography Device for Patient-Delivered Retina Home Monitoring

Abstract: PurposeTo study a novel and fast optical coherence tomography (OCT) device for home-based monitoring in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a small sample yielding sparse OCT (spOCT) data and to compare the device to a commercially available reference device.MethodsIn this prospective study, both eyes of 31 participants with AMD were included. The subjects underwent scanning with an OCT prototype and a spectral-domain OCT to compare the accuracy of the central retinal thickness (CRT) measurements. Results… Show more

“…These centers may be geographically distant from the child’s home (14), and there is growing concern about insufficient workforce in pediatric ophthalmology (15). Recent attempts to build OCT machines, which patients can use to self‐image, have been successful (16) and pave the way for home‐based telemedicine consultations. OCT‐based assessments have the additional advantage over slit‐lamp examination of enabling the assessor to sit at some distance from the patient, lowering the risk of disease transmission in the coronavirus disease 2019 era.…”

“…A proposed novel home-based SD-OCT system termed 'sparse OCT' has recently been developed by a Swiss group (Fig. 6) [49]. The portable device, named MIMO-OCT, generates single 5-mm line scans at a resolution of 400 pixels, or small sample 3.8 × 3.8-mm volume scans at a resolution of up to 150 × 150 pixels.…”

“…Insgesamt kann das NVHO-Gerät als nützlich bewertet werden, um Patienten mit nAMD zwischen Arztbesuchen zu überwachen und bei Patienten mit intermediärer AMD eine Konversion zur nAMD zu erkennen, bevor der zentrale Visus betroffen ist. [14]. Das Gerät erfüllte die ergonomischen Anforderungen von Patienten, war jedoch in seinen Bildgebungsfunktionen eingeschränkt.…”
