Safety and Efficiency of Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy in One Hundred Consecutive Cases

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to report the safety and efficiency of laparoscopic varicocelectomy in 100 consecutive patients operated at a single teaching institution. There were three indications: (1) infertility associated with oligo-astheno-teratospermia (n = 52); (2) chronic dragging sensation of the left testicle (n = 42), and (3) incidental finding of a large varicocele in young adolescents (n = 6). In group 1 the postoperative pregnancy rate was 47% and sperm quantity, concentration and mobility were si… Show more

“…Iselin CE et al 25 reported the mean length of hospital stay (0.9 days) and median total recovery time (5 days) were remarkably short. The length of hospital stay was not affected by whether the patient had unilateral or bilateral varicocoele.…”

“…Existence of a dull, aching and throbbing pain without components of sharp or radiating pain, administration of conservative treatment as an initial trial, and subinguinal ligation increase the success rate. However, Iselin et al [ 15] and Maghraby [5] reported high success rates (80 and 84.5%, respectively) with laparoscopic ligation. Yeniyol et al [21] also obtained 82.8% full response with high ligation in 87 patients.…”

“…In these studies, patients were treated either surgically (open or laparoscopic ligation) or radiologically (transvenous percutaneous embolisation) and complete resolution of pain was reported to be between 48 and 88% [5,[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] . Although surgical treatment is effective, it has some potential complications (wound infection, epididymo-orchitis, hydrocele, hematoma, testicular atrophy).…”

“…Although success rates of 89% to 100% have been shown in a number of studies, postoperative hydrocele rates have not been decreased significantly with the laparoscopic technique despite the potentially better visualization of internal spermatic vessels and lymphatics [9,10,21]. The reported range of hydrocele formation after LV is 5% to 18% in the cited studies.…”
