Safety and efficacy of US-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound for treatment of submucosal fibroids

Abstract: • High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a new minimally invasive therapeutic technique. • HIFU ablation may be safe and effective for treatment of submucosal fibroids • Treatment is minimally invasive and repeatable. • Vaginal expulsion of necrotic tissue is common after treatment.

“…HIFU is the latest developed local ablation technique and a non-invasive technique for the treatment of uterine fibroid and adenomyosis. Results from several published reports have shown that USgHIFU ablation is a safe and feasible alternative for the treatment of uterine fibroids [1][2][3] and adenomyosis [4][5][6]. One advantage of HIFU is its non-invasiveness, which is associated with very low morbidity and very rapid recovery, with return to normal activity in 1 day.…”

“…With the advancement of imaging monitoring technology and key ultrasound ablation techniques, a viable treatment protocol and doctor training scheme have gradually taken shape after years of clinical research and testing [3][4][5][6][7]. Since July 2006, ultrasound ablation for uterine fibroids and adenomyosis under conscious sedation has been applied in many clinical centers in China, and has even become the first-line therapy for patients in some hospitals [8,9].…”

“…However, common complications following HIFU treatment have been reported, including pain in the treated area, subcutaneous edema, rib fractures and skin empyrosis (19). Due to the ultrasonic energy accumulation and deposition on the ribs, necrosis was previously reported to occur in all the layers of subcutaneous, costal and intercostal tissue following HIFU treatment.…”
