SafePsych: improving patient safety by delivering high-impact simulation training on rare and complex scenarios in psychiatry

Abstract: IntroductionDespite an evidence base demonstrating simulation to be an effective medical education tool, it is not commonly used in postgraduate psychiatry training as it is in other medical specialties.ObjectiveThis paper outlines the development and effectiveness of a hybrid-virtual simulation-based workshop designed to improve patient care by improving clinical skills of non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) in detecting and managing rare and complex psychiatric emergencies.MethodsThree clinical vignettes… Show more

“…SBT is based on a fundamental principle that states “never first time on the patient” and allows for developing technical and non-technical skills essential to the successful cancer care process [ 59 ]. Other than oncology, SBT has been confirmed as an effective educational tool in a variety of different areas, including pediatrics [ 18 , 60 , 61 ], surgery [ 62 ], obstetrics [ 17 , 63 ], anesthesia [ 16 , 64 ], and psychiatry [ 19 , 65 ].…”

“…SBT can take various forms, ranging from standardized patients to virtual reality techniques [ 8 , 12 , 13 ]. The contribution of this educational tool has been well documented in various clinical settings, ranging from consultation to specific care [ [14] , [15] , [16] , [17] , [18] , [19] ]. In oncology, error is amplified by the complexity of management [ [20] , [21] , [22] ] and the increasing number of cancer cases [ 23 ].…”

“…In order to facilitate the successful incorporation of IPE into health professions education, studies have found enablers at the institutional (e.g., the provision of appropriate resources), people (e.g., social support), as well as program levels (e.g., thoughtful design of the teaching and course structure). With the uptake in adoption of digital technologies for health professions education as a result of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, this has greatly improved the reach, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of IPE programs [13,24,29,[41][42][43][44][45] without compromising its effectiveness [46]. As such, healthcare settings may want to tap on advancements in digital technology and infrastructure to support the continuity of inter-professional collaboration and practice for better clinical outcomes.…”
