Safe moving and handling of patients: an interprofessional approach

Abstract: A gap in the medical undergraduate curriculum on safe moving and handling of patients was identified, and a project to enhance moving and handling education for undergraduates in various healthcare disciplines was undertaken. A team of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and e-learning professionals developed a cross-discipline e-learning resource, piloted with medical and nursing students at Queen's University Belfast. One outcome of the project was the development of a deeper recognition of the common curricul… Show more

“…According to Tiernan (2014), this practice-learning approach meets a learner's demand just before it is required, maximizing the educational outcome, is particularly effective when implementing practice guidelines. There is currently one other elearning programme specifically aimed at manual handling for use within a healthcare setting across medical and nursing groups (Anderson, 2014), but this is, however, limited to a short on-line test and limited video base. Due to these limitations, it was decided that the multimedia online A1 system was more appropriate to explore to meet the needs of the undergraduate occupational therapy students.…”

“…To ensure greater patient comfort and to reduce the physical demand on nursing staff, a number of modern PH aids and devices have been developed [ 12 ]. In order to use these aids and devices effectively, staff needs to undergo training (both in nursing school and as continuing professional education) on how to use new handling techniques [ 13 ]. The management of health care facilities must be willing to invest in the purchase of new equipment and associated training.…”

“…Organisations have a legal duty to ensure healthcare workers are adequately prepared for their clinical duties and the moving and handling activities that they may encounter whilst in a clinical area [1]. The literature identifies problems with this provision [10,11] and the failing of health and social care organisations in taking advantage of the opportunities and benefits of inter-professional learning when delivering moving and handling education. A number of organisations publish standards and guidelines to inform health and social care organisations and trainers of their roles and duties but they are only able to provide guidance, not make regulatory statements.…”
