Saccharospirillum salsuginis sp. nov., a gammaproteobacterium from a subterranean brine

Abstract: A novel Gram-negative, non-sporulating, moderately halophilic, facultatively alkaliphilic, catalaseand oxidase-positive, obligately aerobic bacterium, strain YIM-Y25 T , was isolated from a subterranean brine sample collected from a salt mine in Yunnan, south-west China. Cells were spirilla, motile by monopolar flagella, with meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Growth occurred with 1-15 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 5 %), at pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum pH 8.0) and at 15-50 6C (optimum 35-40 6C). Ubiquino… Show more

“…Seventy-four percent of QH bacterial clones and 89% of YPL bacterial clones had their greatest (87-100%) sequence identity with uncultured environmental clones. The diversity of novel phylogenetic groups in these salt mines is supported by previous work that yielded several novel bacterial isolates [21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…T was similar to those of S. impatiens and S. salsuginis (Labrenz et al, 2003;Chen et al, 2009) except for the presence of lyso-phosphatidylethanolamine. The cellular fatty acid profile of strain IMCC4453…”

“…The results of the phenotypic characterization of S. salsuginis YIM-Y25 T and S. impatiens DSM 12546 T observed in this study that were different from the original descriptions (Labrenz et al, 2003;Chen et al, 2009) are shown in Supplementary Table S1. These discrepancies might be due to the different incubation temperature and different suspension media used for the API ZYM, API 50CH and Biolog GN2 tests.…”

“…The Saccharospirillum genus belongs to the order Oceanospirillum [45,46]. Currently, this genus includes three species: S. impatientis [45] and S. salsuginis [47] were isolated from hypersaline environments, and S. aesturii was isolated from a tidal flat sediment [48].…”
