Abstract: The effectivity of Sabal serrulata extract in the treatment of symptomatic prostatic hyperplasia was scrutinized in 38 patients. In the course of the 12-month treatment followed up by examinations, the subjective complaints abated in almost 3/4 of the cases. Adverse effects were not encountered. According to uroflowmetry, the average peak flow rate increased from 10.36 ml/s to 14.44 ml/s (p < 0.0001), while the average middle stream increased from 6.02 ml/s to 7.45 ml/s (p < 0.001). Urinary retention decreased… Show more

“…This is in contrast with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors [46]. Prostate volume was found to be decreased by SR in three uncontrolled studies [44,47,48], but this was not confirmed by controlled studies [10,49]. We found a mean decrease in prostate volume of 0.7 cc and 1.0 cc for the SR and TAM groups, respectively, but they were not statistically significant.…”

In addition, this treatment did not influence the effectiveness of drugs taken for other chronic diseases by these patients.…”

“…PV was found to be decreased by SR in 3 uncontrolled stdies [20][21][22] , but this was not confirmed in controlled studies 10,11 .We found the mean decrease in PV of -1.0 mL, -0.7 mL and 0.8 mL for the groups TAM, SR and TAM + SR, respectively, but they were not statistically significant. TAM efficacy does not depend on prostate size and is similar across age group.…”
