Does the addition of Serenoa repens to tamsulosin improve its therapeutical efficacy in benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Abstract: Treatment of BPH by both SR and TAM seems to be efficacious alone. None of them had superiority over another and, additionally, a combined therapy (TAM + SR) does not provide extra benefits. Furthermore, SR is a well-tolerated agent that can be used alternatively in the treatment of LUTS/BPH.

“…When saw palmetto was compared with effective medicine remedies like 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, finasteride intake reduced PSA concentrations, whereas Serenoa repens ONS failed to induce any changes [ 127 ]. Similarly, compared with tamsulosin [ 125 , 128 , 129 ], saw palmetto did not have a significant effect on PSA concentrations after 6 [ 128 ] and 12 [ 130 ] months of supplementation. Moreover, according to a recent Chinese meta-analysis [ 131 ], saw palmetto was more effective in reducing PSA concentrations among men with BPH as compared with tamsulosin; however, in this analysis, non-randomized trials were analyzed together with RCTs.…”

“…The clinical responses to phytotherapy with Serenoa repens extracts are found to be very promising in other studies, too [21,22]. Some authors describes the improvement in erectile function and decreasing complications following transurethral resection of the prostate, especially bleeding [23].…”

“…Twenty-three studies were excluded for lack of useful data. Thus four articles reporting data from four RCTs (Argirovic & Argirovic, 2013;Debruyne et al, 2002;Kaplan, 2016;Morgia et al, 2015) that compared Serenoa repens with tamsulosin over 24-week treatment cycle were included in the analysis (Figure 1). Table 1 presents the baseline characteristics of studies.…”
