RVSAO 2.0: Digital Redshifts and Radial Velocities

Abstract: RVSAO is a set of programs to obtain redshifts and radial velocities from digital spectra. RVSAO operates in the IRAF(Tody 1986, 1993) environment. The heart of the system is xcsao, which implements the cross-correlation method, and is a direct descendant of the system built by Tonry and Davis (1979). emsao uses intelligent heuristics to search for emission lines in spectra, then fits them to obtain a redshift. sumspec shifts and sums spectra to build templates for cross-correlation. linespec builds synthetic … Show more

“…The top 34 and the bottom 10 objects were observed at Gemini North and South, respectively. ing repeat low-and high-spectral resolution observations of galaxies and stars confirm the precision of the crosscorrelation errors (Kurtz & Mink 1998). However, systematic errors can arise from poorly-matched templates, which skew the shape of the cross-correlation peak.…”

“…spectrum was extracted from each slit for the redshift determination. Each 1-D reduced spectrum was both visually inspected by means of the graphical tools available in VIPGI and crosscorrelated with template galaxy spectra using the IRAF package RVSAO (Kurtz & Mink 1998).…”

“…For the redshift determination, the reduced and wavelength calibrated spectra were cross-correlated with a range of galaxy template spectra using the IRAF package RVSAO (Kurtz & Mink 1998). Out of 38 spectra, we could identify 13 secure cluster members (see Table 2) with a median cluster redshift of z = 0.9745 ± 0.0020 and a bootstrapped error estimate.…”
