Rutin synthase in fava d’anta: purification and influence of stressors

Abstract: Lucci, N. and Mazzafera, P. 2009. Rutin synthase in fava d'anta: Purification and influence of stressors. Can. J. Plant Sci. 89: 895Á902. The flavonoid rutin is synthesized in plants from quercetin, via a process in which isoquercitrin is an intermediary metabolite. In this work, the activities of isoquercitrin synthase and rutin synthase, and the quercetin, isoquercitrin and rutin contents of fava d'anta plants stressed for water (drought and flooding) and salt (NaCl) were studied. In general, stress increase… Show more

“…This observation seemed to be a partial resistance for this legume and may be related to activation of the flavonol synthase (FLS) enzyme for biosynthesis of kaempferol and quercetin. In addition, the induced rutin may be fluxed from quercetin by rutin synthase enzyme, which activates this conversion under stress conditions (Lucci & Mazzafera, 2009). Similarly, accumulation of luteolin may originate from the decreasing apigenin through the flavonoid-3'-hydroxylase (F3'H) enzyme, which activates hydroxylation of apigenin into luteolin (Nakamura et al 2010).…”

“…(buckwheat), Saussurea involucrata, and Eucalyptus macrorhyncha (Zielinska et al, 2010). It is also referred to as rutoside, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, or sophorin, and it is the glycoside between the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose ((α-L-rhamnopy-ranosyl-(1→6))-β-D-glucopyranose) (Lucci and Mazzafera, 2009). Several pharmacological activities have been attributed to rutin, and these include cytoprotective, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, vasoprotective, and neuroprotective activities.…”

“…This will provide the scientific basis for the quality control of extracts prepared from the inner bark of this plant. The choice of these three flavonoids was based on other studies, which reported the presence of these compounds in other species of Dimorphandra (Sousa et al, 1991;Ferreira et al, 2001;Lucci & Mazzafera, 2009). The method was validated according to regulation RE 899/2003 of the National Health Surveillance Agency, Brazil (Anvisa, 2003).…”
