Run Away or Stick Together? The Impact of Organization-Specific Adverse Events on Alliance Partner Defection

Abstract: Alliances are inter-organizational relationships wherein partners agree to engage in joint action and share benefits and burdens. But when might an adverse event that strikes one partner become too burdensome for another partner? Extant theories of alliance instability provide incomplete answers, which is problematic: for stricken organizations, anticipating whether their non-stricken partners will remain in the alliance can be essential for survival. Integrating insights from alliance dynamics and organizatio… Show more

“…However, by uncovering the underlying processes whereby these strategies are formed, we also provide empirical guidance for future open entrepreneurs as they respond to stigma. Moreover, while previous studies have been conducted in established industries with a nondigital character (Benson, ; Bruyaka et al, ; Devers et al, ; Durand & Vergne, ; Hudson & Okhuysen, ; Lamin & Zaheer, ; Sutton & Callahan, ; Tracey & Phillips, ), these findings are particularly relevant for our increasingly digital world.…”

“…Extant research has focused upon the importance of relational perceptions for entrepreneurial success: for instance, legitimacy (Garud, Schildt, & Lant, ) and trust (eg, Goel & Karri, ; Yetis‐Larsson et al, ). Stigma, a relational perception that has, thus far, largely been examined within established organisations, has been pointed to as a hurdle for a firm's long‐term survival (Benson, ; Bruyaka, Philippe, & Castañer, ; Devers et al, ; Durand & Vergne, ; Lamin & Zaheer, ; Sutton & Callahan, ; Tracey & Phillips, ). Understanding how—and why—open entrepreneurs respond to, and overcome, stigma will further more generally our understanding of open entrepreneurship.…”

“…Supply chain scholars should explore the extent to which a buyer's association with specific dark-side manifestationssuch as opportunism and fictitious accounting-might deter potential suppliers from entering a buyer-supplier agreement. Individuals who are found to engage in dark activities face stigmatization; consequently, their opportunities to find partners in the marketplace are hampered (Bruyaka, Philippe, & Castañer, 2018). Other costs might entail additional "checks and balances" or less favorable trading conditions.…”

“…Organizations increasingly embrace open innovation strategies, building ecosystems of inter-organizational relationships to identify technological opportunities, share development costs, and reduce time-to-market (e.g., Bruyaka, Philippe, & Castañer, 2018;Goerzen & Beamish, 2005). Inter-organizational relationship represent "relatively enduring transactions, flows, and linkages that occur among or between an organization and one or more organizations in its environment" (Oliver, 1990: 241).…”
