RUL estimation and maintenance optimization for aircraft engines: a system of system approach

Abstract: An aircraft engine is a system of systems with several degrees of complexity. It is important to perform the correct amount of maintenance at each individual maintenance event. A mathematical replacement model is used to ensure that the correct maintenance is performed. The reliability of the results from the mathematical replacement model will be improved if there is a better way to estimate the life length for on-condition engine parts.

“…There are two primary strategies commonly employed for prognosis in aviation, namely, physics-based and data-driven methods. Both techniques include distinct advantages and limits, which is why they are frequently utilized with one another [153]. Prognostics is an academic field that focuses on the prediction of the future performance of a system, with a specific focus on identifying the moment when the system will no longer serve its intended purpose, usually known as its TTF.…”

“…[ 1,2 ] However, crack, wear, and missing angle breakage frequently generate in the fan blades during the course of service, and severely affect the service life of the aeroengine. [ 3 ] Replacing the damaged engine blades directly can greatly increase the maintenance costs. From the perspective of economy and energy conservation, manufacturers are more inclined to repair the damaged blades by in situ repairing process.…”

“…In the past decades, there have been a number of research studies conducted to optimise the maintenance strategies dedicated to various kinds of industrial applications. For example, a simulation was carried out to evaluate the performance of manufacturing production lines with different maintenance policies (Lei, 2010); The maintenance cost and availability of an aircraft system was optimized using a mathematical replacement model (Fornlöf, 2016) and so on.…”
