São descritos os aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos, patológicos e diagnósticos de uma forma de dermatite associada à doença das mucosas (DM) em bovinos. Também são abordadas metodologias para a identificação de animais persistentemente infectados (PI) e o impacto nos índices zootécnicos no rebanho afetado. Os casos de dermatite associados com DM ocorreram em dois bovinos Nelore, de 12 e 24 meses de idade, pertencentes a uma fazenda de ciclo completo de bovinos de corte no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Os sinais clínicos nesses animais consistiam de emagrecimento lento e progressivo, formação de crostas difusas na pele de todo o corpo, pele ressecada, múltiplas ulcerações nas gengivas e face dorsal da língua, que evoluíram para fendas longitudinais, formação de projeções cornificadas e desprendimento dos cascos. Em um caso, também ocorreu diarréia no estágio final da doença. Na necropsia observaram-se ainda erosões longitudinais no esôfago. O exame histológico revelou focos de necrose de coagulação na mucosa do esôfago e língua, com infiltrado de neutrófilos e linfócitos. As lesões da pele consistiam de necrose de coagulação da epiderme associada com infiltrado de neutrófilos e hiperqueratose. Nos dois casos, a suspeita clínica foi confirmada pelo isolamento viral e identificação dos biótipos citopático e não-citopático do vírus da diarréia viral bovina (BVDV), além da detecção de antígenos virais em tecidos por imunoistoquímica. De um lote de 300 bovinos que tiveram contato com animais afetados, 38 foram testados e apresentaram altos títulos de anticorpos para o BVDV. Amostras de sangue coletadas de 1.025 animais jovens e 40 touros da propriedade foram submetidas a pesquisa de vírus para se identificarem possíveis animais persistentemente infectados (PI). O vírus foi isolado do sangue de três bezerros no teste inicial e, 12 meses depois, em dois deles que permaneceram na propriedade. Imunoistoquímica realizada em biópsia de orelhas identificou apenas um destes animais como positivo. O rebanho apresentou redução no índice de fertilidade e taxa de desmame no ano seguinte ao nascimento dos bezerros PI, mas estes indicadores retornaram posteriormente aos valores anteriores. Os resultados apresentados demonstram a presença da infecção por BVDV em rebanhos de corte no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, e evidenciam a necessidade da inclusão dessa enfermidade no diagnóstico diferencial de causas de dermatites generalizadas.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive herds and to identify the risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in breeding cattle herds in the Western region of Parana State. The statistic delineation, the serum samples and information regarding the selected farms, were the same employed in the study of bovine brucellosis for Parana State in the context of National Program for Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis. The sampling was performed in two stages. Blood samples were collected from 1930 females aged ≥24 months from 295 non vaccinated herds. Serum samples were tested for antibodies against BoHV-1 using an indirect ELISA. The epidemiological questionnaire was applied on all the selected farms and aimed to obtain epidemiological data. Hundred ninety of the 295 herds were positive for BoHV-1, presenting prevalence of positive herds of 64. 41% [58.65-69.87%]. The number (≥23) of females aged 24 months (OR=2.22; IC: 1.09-4.51), purchased cattle (OR=2.68; IC: 1.48-4.82), use of common grass (OR=5.93; IC: 1.31-26.82), history of abortion in the last 12 months (OR=2.37; IC: 1.09-5.16) and presence of wildlife animals (OR=8.86; IC: 1.11-70.73) were identified as risk factors for BoHV-1 infection in the multivariate logistic regression. These results indicate that BoHV-1 infection is widespread in the studied region and that factors related to the herd characteristic and management are associated with the infection.INDEX TERMS: Prevalence, epidemiology, risk factors, bovine herpesvirus 1, indirect ELISA.

The detection of Bovine Viral Diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection, especially among persistently infected calves (PI), should be performed earlier in order to eliminate the source of the infection and to prevent the spread of the disease in the herd. However, colostrum intake can influence the results of some of the tests used to diagnose the BVDV infection. Therefore, this study evaluated the efficacy of serum neutralization (SN) test in conjunction with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the diagnosis of BVDV infection before colostrum intake. The deliveries of the animals were assisted to select 52 newborn Holstein calves for inclusion in the study. Initially, the whole blood and serum samples were collected from the calves before (T0) and after (T1) the colostrum intake. The calves that were RT-PCR positive at any of the time-points were retested on the 30 th day post birth (T2). The presence of specific antibodies for BVDV was evaluated by SN, and that of viral RNA by the RT-PCR. The BVDV-specific antibodies were observed in the serum of 13.46% (7/52) of the calves at T0 because of fetal infection. At T1, seroconversion was observed in 100% (52/52) of the calves. The geometric mean titers (GMT) of the antibodies for BVDV increased significantly from T0 (14.52) to T1 (2490) (P = 0.0001). Of the four calves that were RT-PCR positive before colostrum intake (T0), two were seronegative and two, seropositive. Of the forty-eight RT-PCR negative calves, five were seropositive. After 30 days post birth, all of the animals tested negative by RT-PCR, thus excluding the possibility of persistent infection. The association observed between the results of the SN and RT-PCR assays at T0 (P = 0.025) could not be observed at T1 (P > 0.05). The SN test before the colostrum intake allowed the detection of fetal infection in the herd; however, this test was ineffective as a diagnostic method after the transfer of passive immunity. The confirmation of the results of the SN assay by those of the RT-PCR was essential for the identification of the infected calves before colostrum intake. Key words: Bovine viral diarrhea.
