Recent peanut cultivar releases are trending to a larger seed size, but have great resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). Larger-seeded cultivars cost more to plant than smaller at an equivalent population. Reduced seeding rates could save growers on seed costs and impede the spread of southern stem rot, but can reduce plant stands which can lower yields and increase TSWV incidence. Therefore, the objectives of this experiment were to compare seven peanut cultivars (Georgia Green, Georgia-06G, AT 3085RO, Florida-07, Tifguard, AP-3, and Georgia-03L) in single and twin row patterns at three seeding rates (17, 20, and 23 seed/m) on a sandy loam soil at Plains, GA for disease incidence, agronomic, and economic performance. Measured variables included yield and grade, plant height and stand, TSWV and southern stem rot incidence, and adjusted net revenue in 2008 and 2009. Twin rows outperformed single rows whenever differences occurred. The only factors consistently affected by reducing seeding rate were plant height and stand, both decreased at the lowest seeding rate. There was a trend toward lower yields (approximately 6% reduction) at the 17 seed/m rate in twin row pattern, although net returns were not diminished compared to the higher seeding rates since lower seed costs offset yield reductions. The cultivars Georgia-06G and Florida-07 had the highest yield and adjusted net revenue among the seven cultivars in both years. Tifguard and Georgia Green had lowest overall yields and would not be preferred cultivars in sandy loam soils. This study demonstrates that twin rows have higher yield, plant stands, and net revenue, plus reduced TSWV incidence than single row pattern, and a reduction in seeding rate to 17 seed/m can be made without serious risk of lost revenue. However, benefits of reducing seeding rate in twin rows were not as pronounced as they were for single rows, and exhibited a greater potential for lower yield. A grower planting in single rows would likely have the most to gain from planting fewer seed, especially under heavy southern stem rot pressure, but planting in twin rows would still be a preferred option over single rows.

Surface drip irrigation laterals were spaced next to crop rows and in alternate row middles to document crop yield, market grade and gross/ partial economic returns compared with nonirrigated practices. A surface drip irrigation system was installed at two sites on a Faceville (Site 1) fine sandy loam and a Greenville (Site 2) fine sandy loam with 3 and 1% slope, respectively. The cultivar Georgia Green (GG) was planted in both single and twin-row configuration while the cultivar ViruGard (VG) was planted in only a twin-row configuration. Pod yield, farmer stock grade, and partial economic returns were determined for three growing seasons (2002 to 2004). Surface drip irrigated peanut had greater yield, market grade, and gross revenue compared with non-irrigated regimes. Subtracting the cost of the drip tubing showed that laterals spaced at 0.91 m are not cost effective ($-132/ha) while those spaced at 1.83 m returned an average $120/ha compared with the non-irrigated treatment. The cultivar GG had 425 kg/ha higher pod yield compared with VG (4035 kg/ha). Within irrigated lateral treatments, peanut planted in twin-row orientation had 1% higher market grade and lower OK compared with single row orientations. Pod yield and market grade was more stable at Site 2 compared with Site 1 which was probably due to slope and aspect characteristics associated with each site and not necessarily with soil series. The use of surface drip irrigation with peanut can be economically feasible if pod yield increases by at least 675 kg/ ha and growers place drip tubing in alternate row middles.

Two field experiments were carried out at Ismailia Agricultural Experiments and Research Station, A.R.C., El-Ismailia Governorate, Egypt, during growing seasons 2015 and 2016, respectively. In both seasons, the experiment was conducted using the split plot design in randomized complete block design with three replicates to study the effect of P fertilizer and plant density on pods and oil yields, as well as, net return. Three phosphorus (P) fertilizer rates (30, 45 and 60 kg P 2 O 5 per fed) and three peanut plant densities (70, 105 and 140 thousand plants per fed) were tested. A split plot design replicated thrice was used. The results showed that increasing rate of P fertilizer from 30 up to 60 kg P 2 O 5 per feddan increased significantly all the studied peanut traits except seed oil content. Decreasing peanut plant density from 140 to 70 thousand plants per feddan increased significantly numbers and weights of pods and seeds per plant, shelling and seed oil content mean, while the reverse was true for plant height in the two successive seasons. Peanut plant density of 105 thousand plants per feddan achieved the highest pods and oil yields per feddan compared with the other plant densities. Interaction between 60 kg P 2 O 5 per feddan and 105 thousand plants per feddan increased significantly the most studied traits of peanut. Application of 60 kg P 2 O 5 /fed combined with 105 thousand plants per feddan achieved high pods, oil yields and net return.
