Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Vs. Sleeve Gastrectomy: Balancing the Risks of Surgery with the Benefits of Weight Loss

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of the study was to compare weight loss, metabolic parameters, and postoperative complications in patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG).MethodsWe retrospectively studied 30-day postoperative complications as well as change in weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, hemoglobin, hemoglobin A1C, and creatinine from baseline to 2, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively in 383 patients undergoing GB and 336 patients undergoing SG at the University of Michigan… Show more

“…Both procedures cause anatomical rearrangements that directly change gastrointestinal anatomy and function, accelerating food transit and altering hormonal regulation (Tice et al, 2008; Tran et al, 2016). While weight loss could be more pronounced in patients undergoing RYGB compared to SG after two years, the risk for post-surgical complications is greater in patients who have undergone RYGB (Lager et al, 2016). Other studies indicate that RYGB significantly outperforms SG in achieving glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C) values under 7.0% without medications (Schauer et al, 2014).…”

“…Results from combined restrictive and mal-absorptive procedures such as roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) demonstrate excellent immediate weight loss with reductions in body fat mass and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) [1,2]. Reductions in fat mass and VAT play an important role in decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and type-2-diabetes [1].…”
