Rotorcraft Research at the NASA Vertical Motion Simulator

Abstract: In the 1970's the role of the military helicopter evolved to encompass more demanding missions including low-level napof-the-earth flight and operation in severely degraded visual environments. The Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) at the NASA Ames Research Center was built to provide a high-fidelity simulation capability to research new rotorcraft concepts and technologies that could satisfy these mission requirements. The VMS combines a high-fidelity large amplitude motion system with an adaptable simulation e… Show more

“…The VMS is a large motionbase simulator [24] that has been used for numerous handling qualities evaluations [25]. Six degree-of-freedom simulator motion was used for the experiment because the reference trajectory was dynamic, featuring translational accelerations up to 0:35 ft=s 2 and roll/pitch angular accelerations up to 1:3 deg =s 2 ; the VMS cab also provides excellent visual and auditory cues.…”

“…The flexible simulation architecture makes it convenient to interface with and evaluate custom software and hardware in the loop on the VMS. 5 This capability has been used for the Shuttle simulation to integrate the Orbiter brake antiskid electronic control unit hardware.…”
