Rotifera Recorded from China, 1893–1997, with Remarks on Their Composition and Distribution

Abstract: A search of the literature on rotifers recorded from China, includes today 477 valid species names and 42 subspecies or infrasubspecific variants in 84 genera and 28 families recorded since 1893. Chinese rotifera research is reviewed, and all recorded species are listed with current taxonomic status and their first localities in China. Most of the named taxa are widely distributed or cosmopolitan, with only a small number (about 3%) possibly restricted to China. This fauna exhibits 15 endemic taxa. The composi… Show more

“…Since the trophi parts of Dicranophorus uncinatus have characteristics different from those mentioned above, De Smet (1997) Remarks. This species has been reported from Balearic archipelago, Spain (De Manuel et al, 1992), Thailand (Chittapun et al, 1999), Tibet (reviewed in Zhuge et al, 1998) (Fig. 2B-D) Macrotrachela timida timida Milne, 1916, pp.…”

“…This holds in particular for Rotifera, as representative taxon of Micrometazoa that are main constituents of freshwater ecosystems, in PR China (see Fontaneto et al 2012). Most existing records of Chinese representatives of this crucial zooplankton group are quite old and based on outdated taxonomy (Wang 1958;1961;Gong 1983), notwithstanding that a number of reports have recently become available (Koste & Zhuge 1996;Luo et al 2012;Segers & Wang 1997;Segers & Su 1998;Zhuge & Huang 1997;Zhuge et al 1998), including works involving molecular techniques (e.g., Xiang et al 2010) and works involving rotifers in ecological research (e.g., Wen et al 2011). A re-examination of available records is therefore needed to produce a solid basis for future comprehensive work on biodiversity of the taxon in PR China.…”

“…Of about 20 extant species-level taxa, 12 have been recorded from the Palearctic (Segers 2007), while Zhuge et al (1998) record nine taxa including an endemic subspecies; Sudzuki & Huang (1997) describe one additional Chinese Mytilina. Species of Mytilina are loricate, have malleate trophi, and a pseudosegmented foot bearing two toes.…”

“…About 40 of them have been found in saltwaters: 21 euryhaline species, 13 haloxenous species, at least seven strictly haline species have been reported, occurring in inland saline and/or marine habitats (Fontaneto et al 2008). More than 60 species of the genus were recorded in China up to 1997, and most of the named taxa are widely distributed or cosmopolitan, with only Lecane chinesensis (Zhuge et Koste, 1996) possibly restricted to China (Zhuge et al 1998). Further studies should be carried out, especially in marine and brackish water.…”
