Eight new records of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers from Korea

Abstract: The rotifers collected from a brackish water zone as well as various terrestrial habitats such as mosses, lichens, and leaf litter at seven different locations in Korea were investigated. Eight species/subspecies belonging to five genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers new to Korea were identified: Encentrum incisum, Encentrum uncinatum, Cephalodella innesi, Adineta gracilis, Macrotrachella timida timida, Macrotrachella timida inquies, Habrotrocha pavida and Habrotrocha scabropyga. Five bd… Show more

“…Species were identified by both external morphology and anatomy using the keys of Donner (1965) and the original descriptions and redescriptions of specific species (Murray 1906;Song and Kim 2000;Yakovenko 2000aYakovenko , 2000bKutikova 2005;Bielańska-Grajner 2013;Song 2014Song , 2015Song and Min 2015;Song and Lee 2017). Drawings of some rare morphospecies were made with Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 and Photoshop CC 2017.…”

“…They inhabit both aquatic (mainly freshwater lakes, ponds, and streams) and terrestrial habitats (e.g., mosses, lichens, tree barks, soil and litter) (Donner 1965). Rarely, bdelloids are found in marine and brackish waters Demirkalp et al 2010;Song 2014).…”

“…In Korea, a total of seven cephalodellid species have been recorded: Cephalodella auriculata (Müller, 1773), C. catellina (Müller, 1786), C. forficula (Ehrenberg, 1838), C. gibba (Ehrenberg, 1830), C. hoodii (Gosse, 1886), C. innesi Myers, 1924, and C. ventripes (Dixon-Nuttall, 1901) ( Yamamoto 1953 ; Turner 1986 ; Song and Jin 2000 ; Song 2014 ; Song 2018 ; National Institute of Biological Resources 2022 ). Including the genus Cephalodella , studies on the species diversity of the family Notommatidae Hudson & Gosse, 1886 in Korea are insufficient.…”
