Rotifer community structure in fish-farming systems associated with a Neotropical semiarid reservoir in north-eastern Brazil

Abstract: The study was conducted to assess the community structure of planktonic rotifers and their relation to the environmental impact of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linaeus, 1758), aquaculture activities (ponds and net-tanks), associated with a Neotropical semiarid reservoir in Brazil. Our hypothesis was that the ecological attributes of the rotifer community were different when considering the influence of fish aquaculture activities. We identified 28 species, with 10 species from the Brachionidae family. … Show more

“…Rotifera is dominant in environments with high nutrient inputs. Arruda et al (2017) observed that a high density of Rotifera has often been registered with a great density of Cyanobacteria. This fact has been observed in current study during the rainy season.…”

“…Although various studies have indicated the influence of different abiotic factors on the plankton community (Kopp et al, 2016;Arruda et al, 2017;Zebek & Szymanska, 2017;Balkic et al, 2018), no research has been done on a fish pond invaded by macrophytes. The fish pond had to be kept at low fish density and without feed during one year.…”
