Abiotic parameters and planktonic community of an earthen fish pond with continuous water flow

Abstract: Aim Limnological conditions, phytoplankton and zooplankton communities in a fishpond highly affected by management during the dry and rainy seasons are investigated. Methods Water samples were analyzed for physicochemical parameters; soil samples were analyzed for macro- and micro-nutrients, phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, at four sites, during eight months in the rainy and dry seasons. Distance-based linear model (DISTLM) was applied with Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), where the influence of … Show more

“…The ponds (N=2) were dried and treated with lime (calcium oxide-1000 kg/ha.) before the start of the experiments (Sipaúba-Tavares et al, 2003). Bird net (mesh size of 19 mm) was used to cover the experimental ponds to prevent fish predation by birds.…”

“…As the fish grow, the demand for oxygen increases, along with the waste from the uneaten feed and animal excreta, which make the environment rich in organic matter and nutrients (Ernst et al ., 1989). These conditions also alter the entire trophic chain of fish farming (Sipaúba-Tavares et al ., 2019). Different groups of organisms can experience population rises as species exploit the eutrophication and sudden fluctuation of dissolved oxygen (Snieszko, 1974; Neofitou et al ., 2019).…”

“…A avaliação da microbiota da água é necessária para estabelecer, determinar e monitorar a presença de microrganismos indicadores de contaminação e veículos de intoxicações e doenças que possam acometer o homem e as populações de organismos aquáticos (13). Desta forma, as concentrações de coliformes totais e termotolerantes apresentam-se como parâmetros de referência para avaliar a qualidade sanitária de um ambiente aquático, principalmente aqueles destinados à aquicultura (14).…”
