“…Newborn babies can be infected in the nursery, but most will be asymptomatic or have mild disease. [39][40][41] Possible mechanisms for the mild or subclinical infections seen in newborn babies include the protective effect of circulating maternal antibodies, the relative immaturity of the neonatal gut and the reduced virulence properties of some unique neonatal strains. 41,42 Risk factors for severe rotavirus gastroenteritis include socioeconomic disadvantage, malnutrition, preterm birth, infants with low birth weight, compromised immunity and co-infection with other enteric pathogens.…”

[43][44][45][46] However, children with mild or asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections seem not to be at greater risk of severe illness than children without HIV, although they may shed rotaviruses for longer periods.…”

“…The persistence of G10P [11] RVs in Vellore may be due, in part, to their widespread contamination of the environment in neonatal nurseries, thus leading to nosocomial infections (33). Unlike the asymptomatic infections caused by some neonatal RVs (e.g., RV3 and 116E), the Vellore viruses have been associated with GI disease in approximately half of the infected neonates (33).…”

“…Surveillance studies have determined that G10P [11] RVs are a major cause of neonatal infection in Vellore, India, where the viruses have circulated for more than a decade (32,33). The persistence of G10P [11] RVs in Vellore may be due, in part, to their widespread contamination of the environment in neonatal nurseries, thus leading to nosocomial infections (33).…”
