Root surface caries among older Australians

Abstract: Objectives Root caries has increased as a clinical problem in recent decades. However, the use of multiple waves of longitudinal follow‐up data in estimating root caries increment has not been previously attempted. The aims of this study were to quantify root caries increment from a longitudinal study of older adults with 4 oral examinations over 11 years and to examine behavioural factors associated with root caries. Methods A secondary analysis was undertaken using data collected in 4 waves (baseline, 2‐year… Show more

“…Severe dental caries is one of the most common causes of endodontic treatment needs, 30,31 and toothbrushing is fundamental to prevent dental caries and gingivitis. 32,33 The lower use of individual preventive procedures at both levels of care reveals the predominance of the curative model of care. 34 Toothbrushing is an important procedure for establishing oral hygiene habits and reduces the levels of dental biofilm.…”

“…Development of root surface caries is often observed in the remaining teeth of patients who are elderly [13]. Early root surface caries can be treated by self-care with aggressive use of high-concentration fluoride toothpaste or fluoride mouth rinse, 5% sodium fluoride varnish, and noninvasive interventions (such as 1.2% acidulated phosphate fluoride or silver diamine fluoride), and can reduce their activity [14][15][16][17].…”

“…Poverty in some low-middle-income countries such as Indonesia is associated with untreated or neglected dental caries and periodontal diseases (Folayan et al, 2020). Neglected caries and untreated periodontal diseases increase root surface caries and tooth loss cases (Hariyani et al, 2018). Furthermore, neglected dental caries and periodontal diseases contribute to tooth loss in the Javanese population (Timmerman et al, 1998;van der Velden, 2015).…”
