Roman coloured and opaque glass: a chemical and spectroscopic study

Abstract: This work reports the results of an archaeometrical investigation of opaque Roman glass and is mainly focussed on the role of configuration and oxidation state of copper on the colour and opacity of red and green opaque finds (mosaic tesserae, game counters, and glass artefacts) from Sicily and Pompeii excavations. The glass fragments were characterised by EMPA, SEM-EDS, TEM, and XRPD analyses and the copper local environment was investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The analyses of high-resolution… Show more

“…The data presented in this study shows no significant correlation between MnO and Ba (r = 0.285). Sb contents of more than 37,500 ppm (4.99% Sb 2 O 5 ) have been reported for natron glass (Arletti et al, 2006). Most of the sands analysed in this study contain low concentrations of Sb, i.e., below 1.4 ppm.…”

“…-The plot was corrected, the number of samples is 15 Table 1: For not to be mistaken between "not determined" and "not detected", please define "n.d." -A new table (1) with the whole chemical data was added. The explanation of the abbreviation is given in the caption, Reviewer #2: The content and layout of the manuscript are in line with previous papers published by the two first Authors in Archaeometry-focused Journals -namely, references [3][4][5][6], [15,16], [22]. Beyond a few specific suggestions that follow, a more detailed physical discussion of XANES data is recommended for a publication in Applied Physics A.…”

“…or metal nanoclusters (like Cu, Au, Ag) have a very interesting history [1][2][3][4]. Both the copper-and gold-ruby glasses, in particular, have captured sustained interest of mankind since the Roman times due to their distinctive red color and their fabrication and investigation of the origin of red color still continue to be an interesting branch of glass research [5][6][7][8][9]. Although Au and Cu rubies had initially received significant importance for their applications as decorative items and red filter glasses, but with the introduction of selenium based ruby glasses [10], their commercial importance as filter glass started to diminish gradually.…”
