Tourism contributes 10% to global gross domestic product (GDP), yet it generates 5% of all anthropogenic CO2, while 50 to 60% of carbon emissions are indirectly related to the sector. High levels of poverty afflict rural areas in developing countries, and sustainable tourism based on renewable energy is an ideal approach to generate local development. Our objectives are thus to gauge sustainable tourism’s influence on local development in the community of La Florida, Huaral, Peru and to evaluate the potential of renewable energy (solar and wind power) to propose an eco-efficient business alternative. A non-experimental, quantitative approach was used, in which 265 local residents completed a survey to ascertain their perspectives on the proposal. Moreover, the potential for solar and wind energy was measured to identify sustainable alternatives that residents might incorporate into local ventures. The results demonstrate a relationship between sustainable tourism and local development, as tourism activity enables community members to improve their quality of life and offers them the opportunity to generate new enterprises. Likewise, the assessment of renewable energy potential confirms its feasibility in this area.

Pandemic COVID-19 has severely affected the tourism industry worldwide, including Central Java, Indonesia. Hence, this study aims to determine the potency of stakeholders' collaboration in the post-COVID 19 economic recoveries in Central Java. Preliminary data gathering by sequential focus group discussions (SFGD) to identify institutions and their role and objective, followed by a survey with a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using the Matrix of Alliance and Conflict: Tactics, Objective and Recommendation (MACTOR) method. The result shows that all stakeholders agreed that collaboration is critical in economic recovery, but their roles vary depending on their duties and responsibilities. Based on the influence and dependence map, all stakeholders are into four groups: The first group has the strong influence, namely the Cooperatives and SMSEs Agency and Tourism Agency. The second group has both strong influence and dependence, consisting of the Tourism Village Association, Planning and Development Agency, Industry and Trade Agency, and Hotel and Restaurant Association. The third group has a low influence and high dependence, consisting of the community and the Food Security Agency. The fourth group had both low influence and dependence is banking. In addition, there is no potential conflict among all stakeholders involved that could affect collaboration in the economic recovery. Lastly, future cooperation between the Cooperative and SMSEs Agency and Hotel and Restaurant Association should be encouraged.

The use of the state-of-art information and communication technology has been found to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the tourism industry and many countries have chosen to implement smart tourism tools as a strategy to adapt to the continuously changing profile of tourists. While there are many tools which could be implemented for such endeavors, the evaluation of the tourist preferences in relation to their use and importance needs to be done so as to ensure at least the sustainability of investments and of the local development strategies. The Chimborazo Fauna Reserve (canton of Riobamba, Ecuador) was selected for the application of a questionnaire survey to evaluate the importance of 38 smart tourism tools based on the experience of Ecuadorian and international tourists with them. The survey considered more than 700 respondents and 500 valid questionnaires were retained for analysis which was done mainly by developing distributions of the relative frequencies of ratings given on a 5-point Likert scale and by a correspondence analysis at the level of two subsamples: national and international tourists. There were obvious differences between these two groups in terms of importance placed on the smart tourism tools. The first difference was that the Ecuadorian tourists found less utility in the smart tools as compared to the international tourists. The second difference was that the best rated tools in terms of importance were different among the two groups, with the international tourists placing, for instance, more importance on safety-related tools. Correspondence analysis has shown the similarities of profiles and data association, being a useful tool of associating the ratings to the evaluated tools. The knowledge gained by the survey may be helpful in supporting the development of local tourist strategies, providing at the same time valuable data to support preference comparisons with other tourist destinations and countries.
