Role of temperature on nonlinear cardiac dynamics

Abstract: Thermal effects affecting spatiotemporal behavior of cardiac tissue are discussed by relating temperature variations to proarrhythmic dynamics in the heart. By introducing a thermoelectric coupling in a minimal model of cardiac tissue, we are able to reproduce experimentally measured dynamics obtained simultaneously from epicardial and endocardial canine right ventricles at different temperatures. A quantitative description of emergent proarrhythmic properties of restitution, conduction velocity, and alternans… Show more

“…In the following, one will take T 0 = 37 o C and the two parameters Q 10 and B will be fixed to values whose orders of magnitude correspond to values from the literature [10,34,35]: Q 10 = 3 and B = 0.008 K −1 .…”

“…The hypothermia has been shown to be a beneficial effect in resuscitation therapy. Recent modeling studies [9,10] have put forward that fibrillation is dependent of the system size and the body temperature. These studies claim that fibrillation tends to be easier to initiate at lower temperatures and that the frequency of fibrillation decreases with lower temperatures.…”

“…Examples of parameters that can induce a period-doubling bifurcation in cardiac systems include pacing frequency (28), temperature (29), and drugs (30,31). Thus, further development of statistical measures to predict the onset of period-doubling bifurcations is clinically relevant.…”

“…A recent work [58] on the role of temperature on nonlinear cardiac dynamics (alternans in paced ventricular tissues) showed very interesting results. They found that in case of hypothermia (26 • C), ".…”
