Role of periostin in esophageal, gastric and colon cancer

Abstract: Abstract. Periostin, also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2, is a cell-adhesion protein with pleiotropic properties. The protein serves a vital role in the maintenance and development of tooth and bone tissue, in addition to cardiac development and healing. Periostin levels are increased in several forms of cancer, including pancreatic, ovarian, colon, lung, breast, gastric, thyroid, and esophageal head and neck carcinomas. The present review highlights the key role of periostin in tumorigenesis, particula… Show more

“…As an adhesion protein, POSTN regulates cell adhesion and differentiation of osteogenic cells . POSTN is up‐regulated and plays important roles in a wide variety of cancers . The effect of POSTN in ovarian cancer stroma cells activated the Akt pathway in the tumor and was correlated with clinical late stage and tumor recurrence .…”

“…19,20 POSTN is up-regulated and plays important roles in a wide variety of cancers. 21,22 The effect of POSTN in ovarian cancer stroma cells activated the Akt pathway in the tumor and was correlated with clinical late stage and tumor recurrence. 23,24 Moreover, recombinant purified POSTN supported the adhesion and migration of ovarian epithelial cancer cells by interacting with integrin receptors aVb3 and aVb5.…”

“…Moreover, periostin is reported to enhance the metastatic growth of colon cancer by both preventing stress-induced apoptosis in cancer cells and augmenting endothelial cell survival to promote angiogenesis. The expression level of periostin is reported to be noticeably higher in metastatic tumors than that in the matched primary colon cancer [30].…”
