Role of MR venography in the evaluation of deep venous thrombosis

Abstract: Our results indicate that MR can provide highly accurate images, similar to those of contrast venography, in a noninvasive fashion. It is particularly useful in the pelvic region where the limitations of other imaging modalities are more evident.

Although one study has assessed agreement between MR venography (timeof-fl ight technique) and US, 208 MRI has not been systematically evaluated in pregnant patients with suspected DVT.…”

“…Tables S31 and S32 summarize the methodology of a meta-analysis of 14 studies 144 and individual accuracy studies [145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153][154][155][156][157][158][159] of MR diagnostic accuracy. Most of the studies in the meta-analysis were of MR venography (n 5 13), but one study evaluated MR direct thrombus imaging.…”

“…Pelvic MR venography can be performed using fl ow-sensitive or time-of-fl ight sequences, thereby avoiding the use of gadolinium [63]. In comparison with conventional venography in non-pregnant patients, these techniques have a sensitivity of 100 % and a specifi city of 94 % [67]. A two-centre trial compared MR imaging without contrast enhancement in a time-of-fl ight technique for ultrasonography in 27 pregnant patients between the 23 rd and 39 th weeks of gestation [68].…”
