Role of magnetic resonance methods in the evaluation of prostate cancer: an Indian perspective

Abstract: The challenges in detection, localization, and staging of prostate cancer have prompted the investigation of the role of various magnetic resonance (MR) methodologies in a large cohort of men prior to biopsy. The identification of suspicious areas of malignancy was carried out using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Our data shows that apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) may be a reliable marker to differentiate normal, beni… Show more

“…The Cit and Cho levels observed by MRS are usually expressed by using ratios of the integral of the resonance peak of metabolites; for example, Cit/Cho, (Cit/[Cho + Cr]) or ([Cho + Cr]/Cit). 29,30 MRSI, an advanced variation of MRS, has made it possible to acquire high-resolution proton spectra from the entire prostate in a clinically reasonable amount of time. 31 Using 3D-MRSI, the (Cho + Cr)/Cit ratio was found to be a specific marker for prostate cancer, with 98% of the cancer ratios falling above three standard deviations of the mean healthy PZ value.…”

“…As discussed earlier, most applications of MR in PCa are used in clinical MRI and in vivo 1 H MRS . In terms of imaging, MRI is arguably the best technique currently available as a result of the high water content present in human tissues.…”

“…In addition, Jagannathan et al . reported an interesting finding regarding ADC in PZ cancer, namely that, in Asian men, as compared with American, African‐American and European men, ADC values tended to be lower. Thus, ethnic differences in ADC values should also be investigated.…”
