Role of lactone ring of aflatoxin B1 in toxicity and mutagenicity

Abstract: Cleavage of the lactone ring of aflatoxin B1 results in a nonfluorescent compound that has greatly reduced biological activity. Mutagenicity, as measured by the Ames test, is reduced 450-fold compared to that of B1, and toxicity, as measured by the chick embryo test, is reduced 18-fold.

“…Chromophore compound of AFB1 is able to be detected by fluorescence-based detection method. However the toxic moieties of AFB1 do not have fluorescence properties (Lee et al, 1981). Therefore, AFB1 reduction product had been also confirmed with bio-analysis related to its safety.…”

“…48). The mutagenicity (Ames test-TA100) and toxicity (chick embryo test) of aflatoxin D I compared to aflatoxin BI are reduced by 450-fold and 18-fold, respectively (Lee et al, 1981;Park et al, 1988). This process effectively decontaminates aflatoxin-containing feeds.…”
