Integration of Technology among Saudi EFL Teachers

In the field of education, technology is currently considered a new trend. This study aims to examine the factors that affect the integration of new technologies in EFL classrooms. Factors considered include teacher’s age, teacher’s level of technological proficiency, and teacher’s perception of technology. To achieve this, the study involved a questionnaire consisting of 21 items and a total of 38 Saudi EFL teachers participated in it. The results indicate that there is no significant relationship between teacher age and technology integration. However, both teachers’ level of proficiency in technology and teacher’s perception of technology were significantly related to technology integration in Saudi EFL classrooms. It is recommended to provide teachers with professional development and support in technology integration and to supply classrooms with resources such as computers and smart boards.

Technologies have dramatically changed the way people gather information, carry out research, and communicate with others worldwide. Technology has removed the distance obstacles and has made it possible for higher education to effectively teach anyone. Technology integration is being increasingly used in instruction to improve teaching and learning. This rapid development of technology integration has presented a better pattern to find the new teaching models. Consequently, it has a key role in learning and teaching language skills. The integration of technology to create a context to teach and learn English skills has a lot of advantages. The fundamental aim of this paper is to review the issues related to technology integration in the learning and teaching of language skills. In this paper, the researcher defines the term technology integration, expresses the reason of integrating technology, explains the role of technologies in promoting learning, elaborates teachers' roles and learners' roles, reviews previous studies on the benefits of technology in the learning and teaching of language skills, indicates the situation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Iran, and finally mentions the recommendations for the successful integration of technology. The review of literature revealed that the integration of technology into the classrooms considerably improves the learning and teaching of English language skills.

La enseñanza del inglés en la época actual se vale del uso de tecnologías como herramientas necesarias en el proceso de enseñanza – aprendizaje del idioma para que éste sea más efectivo. El artículo presenta los resultados de la investigación realizada sobre el empleo de las TIC como competencia digital para el aprendizaje autónomo de la lengua inglesa por estudiantes universitarios durante la pandemia del Coronavirus COVID-19. La metodología del estudio es cuantitativa descriptiva; los participantes fueron 85 estudiantes de la Facultad de Lenguas UAEMex seleccionados mediante un muestreo no probabilístico. La obtención de datos fue a través del Background Questionnaire (Liu, et. al, 2008), el cual fue diseñando y administrado vía electrónica. Los resultados sugieren que los estudiantes sí han hecho uso de sus competencias digitales para el autoaprendizaje de la lengua inglesa con algunas limitantes por la conectividad a Internet. Finalmente, se establece que esta contingencia sanitaria plantea retos para los profesores para no depender únicamente de la conectividad a Internet para el estudio autónomo.
