Online medical consultation has become increasingly popular, while little is known about what features of such service can impact users’ emotions and behaviours. This study looked into the language features of online text-based medical consultation. Specifically, the aim of this paper was to examine the effects of vague language (i.e., non-specific, imprecise language) on health-related uncertainty, and its affective and behavioural consequences, while considering individual differences in regulatory focus. A between-subject (vague language vs. precise language vs. control condition) web-based experiment was conducted (N = 249), where participants in the experimental groups read virtual doctor-patient conversations where the doctor used either vague or precise language. Results showed that vague language induced more uncertainty than precise language (p = .010); such uncertainty was appraised as a danger (r = .18, p = .004) but not an opportunity (r = .01, p = .932), and subsequently led to negative emotions (r = .45, p < .001). No effects were found on behavioural outcomes, and there was no moderation from regulatory focus. The results suggest that online healthcare providers should refrain from using vague language in communication with patients to avoid eliciting uncertainty and subsequent negative feelings. Future research is needed to further examine the behavioural effects of uncertainty and explore factors that could foster the appraisal of opportunity.

Introduction Awareness of epidemiological and clinical consequences of atrial fibrillation (AF) has increased, as have disease-related costs. Less attention has been paid to patient-related issues, such as understanding how symptoms, different therapies, and lifestyle adjustments affect daily life. We aimed to describe patients' experiences of living with AF. Methods The study design used a parallel convergent mixed methods approach. Patients with AF were included in the SMURF study and referred for catheter ablation. Patients completed questionnaires on symptoms, health-related quality of life, depression, anxiety, and perceived control and were interviewed. The datasets were analysed separately using inductive content analysis and descriptive statistics. Data were merged to obtain a final interpretation. Results Nineteen patients were interviewed and 18 completed questionnaires. Twelve of the patients were male, mean age 60 years (45–75 years). Inductive qualitative analysis revealed three categories: (i) symptoms and concerns limiting life, (ii) dimensions of worries, and (iii) strategies for management. The most common symptoms were tiredness, weakness/fatigue, and breathlessness during activities, and the most pronounced negative impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were physically related, shown in the ASTA questionnaire. The most negative SF-36 scores were found in role limitations due to physical health problems and vitality. HADS revealed five patients with some degree of anxiety and four with some degree of depression. Patients had lower scores on perceived control than perceived helplessness in CAS. Patients' perceived control was higher than their families', and families experienced more helplessness. Conclusions The mixed methods design deepens our understanding of challenges faced by patients. Patients experienced a limited ability to perform activities of daily living due to AF which created different kinds of worries that encouraged the use of various strategies to manage their lives. Healthcare providers need to be aware that relationships between patients and their relatives can change, and therefore they need to be supported and integrated into the care system.

COVID-19 pandemisinin sebep olduğu psikolojik güçlüklere karşı olası koruyucu faktörlerin belirlenmesine ve gelecekte yapılacak çalışmalara öneriler getirilmesine ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bu bağlamda mevcut araştırmanın amacı, kontrol odağı ile depresyon düzeyi arasındaki ilişkide stresle baş etme stratejilerinin aracı rolünün incelenmesidir. Araştırma verileri, pandemi sürecinin başında 189 üniversite öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Veriler, İçsel ve Dışsal Kontrol Odağı Ölçeği, Stresle Başa Çıkma Tarzları Ölçeği, Sürekli Depresyon Envanteri yoluyla toplanmıştır. Katılımcıların %28,6'sının depresyon düzeyinin eşik değerin üzerinde olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırma hipotezleri, Bootstrapping yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucuna göre, stresle problem ve duygu odaklı baş etme stratejileri, kontrol odağı ile depresyon arasındaki ilişkiye aracılık etmektedir. Buna göre, söz konusu aracı değişkenlerin modele dâhil edilmesiyle, dışsal kontrol odağındaki artışın depresyondaki artışı doğrudan yordayıcı gücü kaybolmuştur. Dışsal kontrol odaklı oluştaki artışa bağlı olarak problem odaklı baş etme azalırken, duygu odaklı baş etme artmıştır. Problem odaklı baş etme arttıkça depresyon azalırken, duygu odaklı baş etme arttıkça depresyon artmıştır. Bulgular, COVID-19 pandemisinin psikolojik sonuçları ve ilgili literatür çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır.
